BACKGROUND:
The City is in receipt of a letter from Steve Murow requesting permission from this Commission to donate a bench and plaque to be installed at Brentwood Park in memory of his wife, Jeanne Marie Murow (Attachment 1).
The Murow family has lived in Costa Mesa for over 30 years. Mr. Murow served the City as a member of the Child Care Ad Hoc Committee when his children were growing up. His son and three grandchildren also reside in Costa Mesa. As a general engineering contractor, he built Canyon Park when Joe Erickson was mayor, reconstructed Bristol and Baker intersection; and constructed numerous street and storm drain improvements for the City in the public works arena. Mr. Murow served on the AYSO Board Division 97 and has sponsored over 25 youth sports teams in Costa Mesa. He is involved with ‘Love Costa Mesa’ and is an avid supporter of Project Hope Alliance. He previously served as president and currently serves on the board of HomeAidOC|LA when they restored the living quarters off 21st Street for family housing.
His wife of 46 years passed away after a courageous fight with cancer. Over the past four years, her main objective was to walk independently from their home to Brentwood Park with their three grandchildren, ages 8, 6 and 5, and sit on the old, dilapidated timber "bench" near the shade. When the park was recently renovated, they enjoyed transporting her in a wheelchair to the park.
The Murow family would like to honor her memory by donating a park bench with a memorial plaque for Jeanne Marie Murow.
ANALYSIS:
The request meets the requirements set forth by City Council Policy 800-4 (Attachment 2). Staff has reviewed the proposed location at Brentwood Park and determined it to be suitable for the memorial bench (Attachment 3). Upon approval by this Commission, staff will work with the donor to schedule the installation.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Commission may deny the request or recommend an alternate location.
FISCAL REVIEW:
The installation of the bench and plaque will have minimal fiscal impact on the City, as the donor will incur the cost of the items.
LEGAL REVIEW:
No legal review is required for this item.
CONCLUSION:
Staff recommends that the Parks and Community Services Commission accept the donation of a bench and plaque to be installed at Brentwood Park in memory of Jeanne Marie Murow.
